4) Folk dance in India

                      Yesterday we have learnt about Indian classical dance. Today we shall discuss about Indian Folk dance  . 

∆ What is folk dance? 

                 Folk dances are simply awesome and it is performed to express joy and happiness among themselves. It is performed for every possible occasion to celebrate arrival of new season , birth of a child , wedding , festivals , and other social customs. 

                      Each form of dances reflect the life of the people of a certain County or religion. Not all ethnic dances are folk dance. For instance , ritual dances are not considered to be folk dance. Ritual dances are usually called "religious dances" because of their purpose.

                   Now we have to know how many folk dances are there in our country. But let me tell you dear friends , those are countless. I am divided those folk dances according to states and territories. 

1. Andhra Pradesh - Dhimsa , Lambari , Dappu , topetta gullu , and so on.  


   2. Assam - Bihu  , Bichchua , Canoe jhumara hobjanai and so on. 

3. Arunachal Pradesh -  Buiya , chalo , wancho , popir , pasi kongki , ponung  and so on.


4. Bihar - Bidesia, sama chakwa, bakho-bakhain and so on


5. Chattisgarh - Karma , Raut nach , Panthi , Gaur Maria


6. Gujrat-  Garba , Dandiya ras , Bhavai, and so on.

        

                                                                                     7. Goa - Koli , fugdi , zagor, dekhni , shigmo and so on.



8. Haryana - Jhumar, phag , daph , loor , gugga, khoriya, gagor , dhamal  and so on. 
 
9. Himachal Pradesh - Jhora , dhaman , Dangi , chhapeli and so on. 

10.  Jharkhand - Alkap , karma munda, hanta dance , domkach, ghora nach , mundari nach and so on.

11. Jammu and Kashmir - Rouf , kud dandi , hikat , damali

12. Karnataka - yakshagana, huttari, suggi, karga , lambi


14. Maharashtra   - lavani, gada, lezim etc.


15. Manipur - nupa, dol cholam, thang ta , raslila , lhou sha, pung cholam and so on.


16. Mizoram - cheraw dance , khuallam, chailam, parlam tlanglam and so on.


17. Meghalaya - ka shad suk mynsiem , nongkrem , laho and so on .


18. Madhya Pradesh - Grida dance , matki , khada dance , jawara dance and so on.


19. Nagaland- Rangma , bamboo dance , helaleulee , gethinglim , zeliang and so on.


20. Orissa - savari , ghumara , painka and so on.


21. Punjab- bhangra , griddha , daff , bhand and so on.


22. Rajasthan- ghumar ,  chakri , suisini , kalbelia , jhulan leela and so on. 


23. Tamil Nadu - Kumi , kolattam , kabadi and so on. 


24. Telengana - Lambari , gusadi dance and so on.


25. Tripura - hojagiri 


26. Uttar Pradesh - Jhora, chapeli , kajri and so on.


27. Uttarakhand- Garhwali , kumayuni and so on.


28. West Bengal - Kathi, gambhira, baul , dhali and so on.


29. Sikkim- Lama dance , khukuni , maruni , denzong chu faat and so on.


30. Lakshadweep - Lava , kolkali , parichakali and so on.


31. Andaman and Nicobar Islands - Nicobari dance.

                       " मुदम आनंदम रती ददाती"                    (Mudam anandam rati dadati) That means  "what gives happiness".   In Indian classical dance there are two types of MUDRAS , a) one hand gestures or  ASAMYUKTA MUDRA  ,    b) double hand gestures or  SAMYUKTA MUDRA  . Mudra should be meaningful or simply aesthetic. They also accompany a wider bodily expression that will give full meaning to the dance. India is that kind of country that preserve its own heritage and culture.                                 Our country is divided into distinct regions--North , West , South , East , and Northeast.                                 In India , as there is variety in food and clothing , there is also variety in dance.
